3 wise tips for saving money that work
Here are 3 tips for saving money and spending in a way that is not going to make you feel guilty or desperate to receive that next check.
It’s important to understand that money is just a resource and it does not define your value. Your most valuable asset is you! Money can help you a lot and is something you are in control to use in your favor.
After that little reminder, let’s start:
1. Don’t buy if it doesn’t convince you
Has it ever happened to you that while you’re about to buy something, you’re not feeling great about it or your intuition is kind of rejecting it?
Examples
“Something is not great with this salad, looks weird but well let’s ignore that and buy it.”
“I don’t want this but the lady that attended me has been so nice, I can’t change my mind now.”
At the end you regret it, or spend time returning it, which is valuable too. So, don’t buy things you realized at the moment that you don’t want, don’t continue the transaction automatically like a robot, or because of pressure.
2. Avoid buying it if it doesn’t align with your goals
Pursuing your goals is another whole topic but we can give you this tip that helps you to keep your goals in mind. When you make your next purchase decision think if it helps you with your goals but, specially if it is opposite to them. That’s the easiest way to realize it a no-no.
Example
“I want to eat healthy but I’m buying a cake tonight.”
It can be hard at first but if your goal really is to eat healthy, not buying this will be the best for you. You can even see it as a double win: you stick to your goal and you save money by just doing it.
It’s not to not eat cake ever, but having this on mind until you can naturally limit these expenses, because they don’t align with your goals. When you really have clarity about your main goal is not a sacrifice to use money for something that doesn’t align to it. Instead you can think of using that money for buying some fruits or vegetables you like in the market.
3. Do I really need it?
Some people are experts at convincing themselves they need that, but stop a sec, think it again before deciding to buy it. Ask yourself questions such as:
- Why do I need it? It has to be a real need, not want or wish, a need because is easy to spend it all when not distinguish between necessary expenses and other expenses.
- As if you were an engineer, think: is there another way to achieve what I want without having to buy this? I could be saving money + applying my problem-solving skills.
- When is not disposable: how many times is it likely I will use this?
These questions will help you identify if it was just a sudden rush to swipe that card.
We hope these saving money tips do help you.
The most important thing to apply them is deciding to be loyal with a responsible spending that truly aligns to you. Realize that these tips aren’t rejecting you to spend on something on particular. It’s using your resources in the best way to achieve your end goals.
Let’s recap:
- The first tip is about following your wisdom.
- The second tip is about following your goals.
- The third tip is about not spending on things that are likely not going to solve what we want it for, or at least, not in an efficient way.
