What is a nomad nowadays?
We can find definitions from official dictionaries, such as:
Cambridge: a member of a group of people who move from one place to another rather than living in one place all of the time.
RAE: said of who goes from one place to another without a permanent place to reside in.
A little bit of history
In the past, nomads were seen as the unknown groups we did not want to know about. For many decades, human race aspired and put effort into settling down in one place, the more predictable the better, and it makes sense! Feeling safety has been fundamental to the survival and well-being of individuals and societies throughout human history.
Nomads nowadays
With globalization, technology and remote jobs, this is changing. More and more people, especially young generations are looking for mental and financial stability while moving from one city to another, from one country to another, taking advantage of technology to keep in touch with their loved ones, having a job done remotely (or not) and looking for safety in resources and experiences rather than a place to call home.
Let’s forget about the limitations around what it is:
- Someone that lives in a tropical paradise… Those are just “the popular” ones.
- Who is travelling every month or so… It can be someone that changes cities in his/her own country or that moves every three years.
- That is an influencer… Nomads can be from different backgrounds, ages and socioeconomic situations. Many of them work remote but, some work in-person too, or some may not have a job.
In this site, we define a nomad from heart:
- Someone who enjoys getting to know new places.
- Does not want or know yet where to settle.
- Wants to see the beauty this world has to offer.
- Moreover, looks for freedom by being in movement.
